FREDONIA, N.Y. -- A trio of Devils excelled in wood bat summer leagues this past summer. Seniors Ricky Carlson (Frewsburg) and Jordan Basile (Jamestown) played for the Weyburn Beavers of the Western Major Baseball League in Saskatchewan, Canada. Junior Rob Herrmann (Trumansburg) played for the Allegany County Nitros of the New York Collegiate Baseball League.
Basile finished the season with a .317 batting average, collecting 33 hits in 104 at bats. He was second on the team in batting, hits and RBI (18).
Carlson, a left-handed pitcher, was a member of the starting rotation. He posted a 2-5 record and 4.22 ERA, walking only three batters in 43 innings pitched.
The WMBL is made up of 12 teams with players predominantly from Division I programs from across the United States and Canada. The teams play a 36-game schedule throughout central and western Canada.
Herrmann, a junior, was one of two catchers on the Nitro's roster. He posted a .259 average, starting 23 of the team's 40 games. He threw out 10 of 32 would-be base stealers. This past spring, he was named all-confernece and all-region for the Blue Devils.
The NYCBL is a Major League sponsored collegiate league made up of 14 teams throughout the state.The Nitros have produced 24 players that have entered professional baseball since 1998, including several major leaguers.
All three return to Fredonia State this season.
