CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Defensive breakdowns in the second of two games Saturday resulted in Fredonia State's first loss of the season, a 10-2 setback to St. Lawrence at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.
Five errors in the fifth inning led to six St. Lawrence runs and enabled to the Saints to gain a mercy-rule victory in the first-ever meeting between the two New York State teams.
The downer came after the Blue Devils (2-1-1) played one of their best games in recent seasons - a 7-7 tie in nine innings with traditional North Coast Athletic Conference contender Ohio Wesleyan. Ohio Wesleyan led four separate times, only to have the Blue Devils rally each time - in the third, fifth, seventh, and eighth innings. They had the winning run in scoring position in each of the final three innings.
Brittany Lis (Lancaster) led the 12-hit attack with four singles, including game-tying hits in the sixth and eighth innings. She finished with three RBI. Brittany Connell (Geneva) doubled and singled as did Rebecca Zimmerman (Jamestown), who pitched a complete game in her first Fredonia State appearance in the circle. She allowed eight hits, struck out three, and only three of the runs she allowed were earned.
Freshman right-hander Jennifer Tighe (Hamburg/Frontier) was saddled with the loss against St. Lawrence which came after the Blue Devils led 2-0. The errors behind Tighe and reliever Michelle Lattner (Cheektowaga/West Seneca East) led to seven St. Lawrence runs. Jessica Nelson (Allegany/Allegany-Limestone) had two singles among the five Blue Devil hits.
The Blue Devils' 12-game Florida trip reaches its midpoint Sunday with two games at the Lee County Sports Complex -- 9 a.m. vs. College of Wooster, and 11 a.m. vs. Macalaster.
