CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland offense was too much for Fredonia State as the Blue Devils dropped a SUNYAC doubleheader, 6-1 and 11-3, at Dragon Field.
The Red Dragons (24-2, 8-0 SUNYAC) scored all their runs in one inning of game one, then erupted for seven runs in the first inning of the second game after the Blue Devils (12-9-1, 4-6 SUNYAC) broke on top 3-0.
Cortland's Katie Finch pitched five scoreless innings and Lyndsay Rowell yielded the lone Blue Devil run, a solo homer in the sixth inning by freshman catcher Katie Turvey. Freshman third baseman Lauren Larson had a pair of singles for the Blue Devils while freshman right-hander Jennifer Tighe was tagged with the loss to drop to 4-4 this spring.
In the second game, Larson led off the game with a ringing double to left-center and later trotted home on Turvey's second homer of the afternoon, a three-run job over the scoreboard in deep left-center. But that accounted for all the Fredonia State offense.
Rose Morrison's three-run homer in the last of the first was the highlight of Cortland's seven-run first inning inning off Blue Devil freshman right-hander Ashley LaPorta. The Red Dragons rolled up 15 hits as a team while Cortland right-hander Diana Perez settled down after the first inning. She had a complete-game five-hitter over five innings - the game was ended by the eight-run mercy rule - after Finch and Rowell combined for a four-hitter in the first game.
The Blue Devils remain in SUNYAC competition for its next two games, a home doubleheader Tuesday vs. Buffalo State. The first game is a 3 p.m. start.
