FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Buffalo State's timely hitting and the pitching of Nicole Sabuda led to a 3-0 victory over Fredonia State in the first game of a SUNYAC doubleheader Tuesday.

The Blue Devils (12-11-1, 4-8) also fell in the nightcap, 6-3.

The Bengals (16-8, 8-4 SUNYAC) did all their scoring in the first game during the fifth inning. With one out, Carly Lopez ripped a change-up into the right-field corner and scooted into third with a triple. She scored the game's first run on a grounder to short, resulting in an error. Krystin Lekki then delivered the game's biggest hit, a two-run homer to deep left.

Sabuda struck out three and scattered eight hits to earn the shutout and improve to 5-2. Six of the hits were collected by two Blue Devils -- two each by Lauren Larson and Courtney Wight. The Blue Devils stranded eight runners while losing pitcher Rebecca Zimmerman fell to 2-3. She induced 12 ground ball outs.

Sabuda and Marissa Mariano were the hitting heroes for Buffalo State in the second game. Each went 4 for 4 off losing pitcher Jennifer Tighe, who dropped to 4-5. Sabuda scored three runs while Mariano had four RBI, including a two-run double to break a 1-1 tie in the top of the third. Karen Oste also had a two-run single for Bengal insurance runs.

Aimee Fisher picked up the win to improve to 6-1 while Jenna Frieling worked 2 2/3 innings of relief for the save. They combined to yield seven hits, including two each by Brittany Lis and Michelle Lattner, and a solo homer by Larson, her first as a collegian.

The Blue Devils return to action Thursday at Pitt-Bradford.
