FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State freshman Jennifer Tighe (Hamburg/Frontier) shut out Alfred, 1-0, in the first game of a doubleheader Monday.
Tighe outdueled Alfred's Chelsey Cary (Corfu/Pembroke), who yielded the game's only run in the fourth. With two outs, Katie Turvey (Lockport/Depew) doubled to left. Pinch-runner Jessica Connelly (Fairport) went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a bad-hop single past first by Michelle Lattner (Cheektowaga/West Seneca East).
Cary allowed four hits, walked one, and struck out five while Tighe fanned seven and did not walk a batter. Only one Alfred runner made it as far as third but Tighe pitched out of the jam with a strikeout and groundout in the top of the fourth. She also received help from her defense -- Turvey threw out two runners trying to steal second.
The second game was all Alfred, handing the Blue Devils a 14-2 loss. The Saxons (24-6) jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first inning as Nicole Hedrick (Albany/Catholic Central) capped the inning with a three-run homer. She added an RBI single in a six-run third inning, also her last inning of pitching. Lauren Peterson (Abington, Md./Hardford) pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Meanwhile, Karen Folts (Penn Yan) had two hits and three RBI while Jessica Figallo (Ridgewood, N.J.) added two hits.
For the Blue Devils (15-20-1), Lattner had a hit and run scored and Brittany Lis (Lancaster) rapped an RBI single.
The final games of the Blue Devils' season are Tuesday, a 3 p.m. doubleheader against nationally ranked Rochester.
