FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State won 25 of 26 events Wednesday while rolling over the Brockport Golden Eagles in men's and women's swimming and diving at the Steele Hall Natatorium.
The Blue Devil men emerged with a 148-85 victory, while the women were 146-80 winners. Both teams competed in several events as exhibitions.
Double individual swimming winners on the men's side were junior Mike Seay (Grand Island) in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard freestyle, and sophomore Mike Mitchell (Medina, Ohio) in the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke.
For the women, Juliana Walker (Frewsburg), a freshman, won both the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley, junior Monica Dunlevy (Batavia) doubled in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle races, and freshman Renee Solly (Lockport) won both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles.
In women's diving, six-time All-American Kelly Sponholz (Alden) won the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard competitions with NCAA provisional qualifying scores. In addition, three freshmen -- Samantha Brethel (Floral Park/Sewanhaka), Leanne Kies (Owego), and Bethany Jones (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) -- each surpassed the 200-point mark off both boards for the first time as collegians.
Male divers Christian Torres (Dunkirk), a junior, and senior Josh Brewer (Canandaigua) posted NCAA provisional scores off the 3-meter board.
It was the final home meet of the 2008-09 season and marked the final Steele Hall competitive appearance by Sponholz, Brewer, Lauren Sieber (Cheektowaga/West Seneca East), Emily Dizer (Tonawanda/Sweet Home), and possibly Al Palmquist (Olean), an accelerated senior with one season of eligibility remaining. They were honored during a pre-meet ceremony along with student-manager Austin Kelm and graduate assistant Laura Walther.
The Blue Devils are back in action Saturday at Oneonta vs. the Red Dragons and Hartwick College.
