FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State swimming and diving teams opened up their season playing host to Division I Niagara University. The Devils had several strong showings -- a sweep in both the men's and women's diving events, a double winner for the men and a school record for the women -- but could not outlast Niagara. The men fell 129-105, and the women lost 143-100.
Senior Christian Torres (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) won both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. He scored 249.75 and 256.40, respectively. Sophomore Shane Ammering (Canandaigua/Canandaigua) was runner-up in both events.
Senior Mike Seay (Grand Island/Grand Island) won the 200 IM (2:03.68) and 200 breaststroke (2:19.59).
The Blue Devil men also claimed the 200 freestyle relay. Ammering, Rob Sweeny (Fredonia/Fredonia), Derek Greiner (Angola/Lake Shore) and Brian Davis (Frewsburg/Frewsburg) finished in 1:36.05.
For the women, freshman Sarah Ficarro (Owego/Owego) was a double winner on the 1- and 3-meter boards. In the 1-meter, she edged out teammate Heather Robin (Dansville/Dansville), 218.70 to 217.30. In the 3-meter, she scored 215.45.
Sophomore Juliana Walker (Frewburg/Frewsburg) won the 50 freestyle (25.98) and was part of the winning 200 medley relay team (1:54.37). Freshmen Emily Ginty (Chenango Forks/Chenango Forks), Stephanie Andrasek (Parma, Ohio/Normandy), Elizabeth Schake comprised the rest of the relay team.
One school record fell. Andrasek set the 200 breaststroke mark in a time of 2:36.67. She finished second in the event.
Head coach Arthur Wang felt the Devils had a positive start to the season: "I am happy with the results of the first meet of our season and we were very competitive against a D1 program."
The team will compete in the Cortland relays on Saturday.
