MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Fredonia State freshman Sarah Ficarro (Owego) finished sixth in the NCAA Division III women's 3-meter springboard diving finals Saturday night.

Ficarro scored 433.45 points after a preliminary score of 490.50 Saturday afternoon  at the University of Minnesota's University Aquatic Center.

Her preliminary score was second best among 22 women heading into the evening finals.

Hayley Emerick, a junior from Trinity (Texas), won the 3-meter competition with 514.15 points. Emerick's teammate, senior Lindsay Martin, was second with 490.40.

Martin won the 1-meter competition Thursday, while Ficarro was second in her first appearance on the national stage.

In the 3-meter, Ficarro was attempting to follow in the footsteps of Kelly Sponholz, who won the event in 2009 and became Fredonia State's first national champ in swimming and diving.

Like Ficarro, Sponholz was also second in the 1-meter event last year.

In addition to winning two All-American plaques, Ficarro was the SUNYAC champ in both 1-meter and 3-meter events last month.
