FREDONIA, N.Y. -- One Fredonia State diver qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving championship meet later this month.

Kelly Sponholz, a senior from Alden, will be making her fourth straight trip to nationals, when the championship meet is held March 16 and March 18 at the University of Minnesota. Division III school Macalester is the host school.

An eight-time SUNYAC champ in both 1-meter and 3-meter springboard diving, Sponholz provisionally qualified off both boards and had both of her best scores stand up following a video review by a independent panel of diving judges. She is one of 22 women entered in each event - eight of them seniors.

Her best finishes nationally came during her sophomore year when she was third in the 1-meter and fifth in the 3-meter. Last year, she was sixth in the 3-meter and seventh in the 1-meter. Her freshman year saw her finish 11th in the 1-meter and 14th in the 3-meter.

Two Fredonia State men who had provisionally qualified failed to make the 22-man field. Christian Torres, a junior from Dunkirk, and Joshua Brewer, a senior from Canandaigua, were not among the entries released Friday afternoon.

"We're extremely disappointed," Fredonia State head coach Arthur Wang said of the men missing out. Wang was perplexed that a diver from another New York school make the NCAA field despite losing to Torres three times during the past season.
