ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The first meet of Fredonia State's track and field season proved to be a good one for the team's sprinters.
Competing Saturday at the Rochester Institute of Technology Invitational, junior Webster Thomas (Windsor, Conn.) emerged as the winner of the men's 55-meter dash with a time of 6.56 seconds. There were 37 men entered in the event. On the women's side, junior Kate Brett (Webster/Webster Schroeder) won the 55-meter high hurdles, the best of 26 entrants, with a time of 8.81 seconds. Both winning times were ECAC qualifiers.
Also among the sprinters, sophomore Carl Caughell (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield) was third in the men's 55-meter high hurdles (8.30 seconds) and freshman Christopher Rhinehart (Olean) was third in the men's 200 meters (23.41 seconds) in his first collegiate competition.
In distance events, sophomore Eddie Novara (Angola/Lake Shore) was third in the mile with a personal-best time (4:24.09) and came back later in the day to finish third in the men's 3,000 meters (8:48.75), just behind teammate Nick Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen), a junior, who was second in the race with a time of 8:47.38. In field events, sophomore Keri Heath (Farmington/Victor) was third in the women's 20-pound weight throw (12.99 meters).
The Mary Phillips Invitational -- the only home meet of both the indoor and outdoor seasons -- is next Saturday at the Steele Hall Fieldhouse starting at 11 a.m.
