Kelley wins long jump at R.I.T.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Fredonia State junior Michael Kelley (Geneseo) recorded a winning long jump of 6.70 meters Saturday at the Rochester Institute of Technology Invitational.

In addition, Kelley was also fifth in the triple jump with a measurement of 13.01 meters. Six other men and five women had top-six finishes at the non-scoring event.

On the men's side, junior Rob Rappole (Bemus Point/Maple Grove) was second in the 800 meters in a time of 1:56.59. Sophomore Nick Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen) was fifth in the same event in 2:00.28. Guarino was also fifth in the mile run with a time of 4:29.39, just ahead of his twin brother Josh Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen), sixth in 4:31.13.

Blue Devil men also recorded sixth-place finishes in the 55-meter high hurdles and the 35-pound weight throw. Carl Caughell (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield), a freshman, ran the hurdle event in 8.38 seconds (his qualifying time was 8.36). Sophomore thrower Louis Solomon (Bronx/Evander Childs) threw the weight 13.21 meters.

The women's top finisher was sophomore Kate Brett (Webster/Webster-Schroeder), who was second in the 55-meter hurdles, .01 of one second behind the race winner. Brett's second-place time was 8.88 seconds.

Also on the women's side, junior Jackie Majka (Depew) was fourth in the high jump after clearning 1.52 meters, as well as fourth in the triple jump (10.27 meters) and fourth in the high jump (1.52 meters).

Sixth-place finishers were freshman Keri Heath (Farmington/Victor) in the 20-pound weight throw (12.17 meters); junior Sarah Furman (West Berne/Berne-Knox-Westerlo) in the 3,000 meters (11:08.46); and sophomore Hailey Guard (Youngstown/Lewiston-Porter) in the 800 meters (2:33.51).
