2010 MARY PHILLIPS INVITATIONAL RESULTS
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- A solid day by the Fredonia State men Saturday included a NCAA provisional qualifying run during the annual Mary Phillips Invitational. There was also a triple winner among the women.
Nick Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen), a junior, won the 800 meters in 1:54.37, almost one second faster than the NCAA Division III provisional time.
Other top finishers for the Fredonia State men: Webster Thomas (Windsor, Conn./St. Georges College), a junior, was first in the 55 meters (6.67 seconds); sophomore Carl Caughell (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield) won the 55-meter high hurdles (8.09 seconds); and senior Tom Williams (Queensbury) was first in the mile run (4:41).
Also, freshmen Chris Rhinehart (Olean) and Spencer Lefort (Java Center/Pioneer), were one-two in the 200 meters. Rhinehart's winning time of 23.96 seconds edged Lefort's :24.09. Lefort covered 6.20 meters to win the long jump.
Jack Bennett (LeRoy), a freshman, was the first collegiate finisher -- second overall -- in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:24.21. In the pole vault, junior Broncho Rollins (Ithaca) and sophomore Cody Dahleiden (East Aurora) each cleared 13.6 feet, and freshman Joe Schwab (LeRoy) cleared 12.6 feet.
The Blue Devils also claimed a win in the distance medley relay.
In the women's portion of the same meet, senior Jackie Majka (Cheektowaga/Depew) won all three jumping events -- the high jump (1.57 meters), the long jump (5.04), and the triple jump (10.11). Kate Brett (Webster/Webster-Schroeder), a junior, won the 55-meter high hurdles (9.39 seconds) and the 200 meters (:27.89).
Keri Heath (Farmington/Victor), a sophomore, was the first collegian in the women's 20-pound weight throw (12.51 meters), while two Fredonia State freshmen cleared 9.6 feet in the pole vault -- Jess Gniazdowski (Arcade/Pioneer) and Chelsea Caruso (Falconer).
Athletes from Alfred University, Alfred State, and Erie Community College, and well as several alumni, competed. Fredonia State competes next Saturday at Colgate University.
