FREDONIA, N.Y. -- An NCAA provisional qualifying throw and a collegiate-best jump were among the Fredonia State highlights Saturday at the Blue Devils' annual Mary Phillips Open.
Senior thrower Julia Hopson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) had a 20-pound weight throw of 16.75 to provisionally qualify for nationals. She was the top collegiate finisher in the event as well as in in the shot put, bested only by Adriane Blewitt, a seven-time NCAA Division II champ and U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier.
Junior jumper Jackie Majka (Depew) won three events at the Open -- the high jump, the triple jump, and the long jump. Her long jump of 5.22 meters was her best effort as a collegian.
Two Fredonia State men won individual events. Robert Rappole (Bemus Point/Maple Grove), a junior, was first in the 800 meters. In the pole vault, sophomore Greg Craft (Cheektowaga/JFK) had the best effort by a collegian.
The next meet for the Blue Devils is next Saturday at St. Lawrence University.
