GENEVA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women finished fifth at the SUNYAC Track and Field competition, while the men finished sixth.
Senior Julia Hopson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) defended her title in the weight throw with a personal best and SUNYAC meet and school record of 17.62 meters. That is also an automatic NCAA qualifying score. She also claimed the shot put with a distance of 12.86 meters, an indoor best for her. The victories were the 10th and 11th SUNYAC titles for her career.
Junior Jackie Majka (Depew) had a solid all around meet earning 18 points for the Blue Devils. She finished second in the long jump (5.21 meters), fourth in the triple jump (10.74 meters) and fourth in the high jump (1.56 meters).
Sophomore Kate Brett (Webster/Webster-Schroeder) defended her title in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.61 seconds.
Senior Trisha Ippolito (Angola/Lake Shore) also earned points for the Devils. She finished seventh in the mile in a time of 5:28.56. Freshman Keri Heath (Farmington/Victor) finished seventh in the weight throw with a distance of 12.56 meters.
The distance medley relay team finished sixth and the 4 x 400 relay quartet was seventh.
For the men, junior Mike Kelley (Geneseo) had a personal best in winning the triple jump (13.99 meters). That distance was an ECAC qualifying standard. Kelley was fourth in the long jump at 6.48 meters. Finishing behind Kelley and in sixth place in the triple jump was freshman Tyler Riberdy (Shenendehowa), with a distance of 13.31 meters.
Sophomore Ed Novara (Angola/Lake Shore) was second in the 5,000 meters, clocking in at 15:06.59. Sophomore Mac McMahill (Hemlock/Livonia) was third in the 800 meters in a time of 1:56.95.
Junior Tom Williams (Queensbury) and freshman Carl Caughell (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield) each claimed a fifth place finish -- Williams in the 5,000 meter (15:24.15), and Caughell in the 55 meter hurdles at 8.20 seconds. Sophomore Nick Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen) was sixth in the mile with a time of 4:23.14.
Sophomore pole vaulter Greg Craft (Cheektowaga/JFK) tied for sixth in clearing 4.08 meters.
The distance medley relay team of Nick Guarino, sophomore Josh Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen), McMahill and junior Rob Rappole (Bemus Point/Maple Grove) finished fourth in a time of 10:52.14. The 4x400 meter relay team was eighth.
The Devils next competition is the ECAC Championships on March 6 and 7.
