ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Two Fredonia State men were event winners with NCAA provisional qualifying marks during the Jim Wuske Invitational at Mount Union College.

Nick Guarino (Bergern/Byron-Bergen) was victorious for the third straight meet. His winning time Saturday of 1:53.24 was a Wuske meet record and shaved 1.13 seconds off his winning mark Jan. 23 at the Mary Phillips Invitational -- a full two seconds under the NCAA provisional standard. He also won the 1,000 meters at the Colgate Invitational held Jan. 30, setting a SUNYAC indoor record in the process.

Broncho Rollins (Ithaca) won the Wuske men's pole vault with a clearance of 4.65 meters, which is equal to 15 feet, 3 inches and an NCAA provisional mark. Guarino and Rollins are juniors. The NCAA Division III championship meet is March 12-13 at DePauw University.

The Blue Devil men had several other top-eight finishers at the Wuske meet. Dan Wright (Fredonia) and two relay quartets had second-place performances, while there were two thirds, one fourth, one fifth, two sevenths, and one eighth.

Wright, a sophomore, was second in the 500 meters with a time of 1:10.88, while freshman David Ballard (Victor) was fourth in 1:13.28. In other individual events, sophomore Carl Caughell (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield) was third in the 55-meter high hurdles (8.20 seconds after 8.19 in the preliminaries); sophomore Cody Dahleiden (East Aurora) third in the pole vault with a personal-best 4.20 meters; junior Greg Craft (Cheektowaga/JFK) fifth in the pole vault (4.05 meters); Matt Kepler (Valley Cottage/Nyack) seventh in the mile (4:36.22); Chris Rhinehart (Olean) seventh in the 200 meters (:23.55); and sophomore Zack Eldridge (Cheektowaga/Cleveland Hill) eighth in the shot put (12.92 meters).

The second-place relays consisted of Rhinehart, freshman Ryan Storms (Depew), junior Ryan Norton (Batavia), and junior Webster Thomas (Windsor, Conn.) in the 4-by-200 with a time of 1:35.03; and Ballard, freshman Jack Bennett (LeRoy), junior David "Mac" McMahill (Hemlock/Livonia), and senior Joe Vella (Hamburg) in the distance medley relay with a time of 11:15.41.

On the women's side, seniors Rhea Williams (Windsor) and Sarah Furman (West Berne/Berne-Knox-Westerlo) had sixth-place finishes. Williams was sixth in the 400 meters (1:04.08), while Furman was sixth in the mile (5:47.24). In addition, junior Kate Brett (Webster/Webster-Schroeder) was ninth in the 55-meter high hurdles, and freshmen Chelsea Caruso (Falconer) and Jessica Gniazdowski (Arcade/Pioneer) 10th and 11th, respectively, in the pole vault. Each woman cleared 2.90 meters (9' 6 1/4"), but Caruso had one fewer missed vault.
