TAMPA, Fla.  -- The Fredonia State outdoor track and field season began today with the Bulls Invitational at the University of South Florida.

In women's events, Kate Brett (Webster/Webster-Schroeder) finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:04.22, only two-hundreths off an NCAA provisional mark. Brett also ran an impressive 15.82 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles.

Jackie Majka (Cheektowaga/Depew) was seventh in triple jump with yet another personal best of 11.26 meters. She was also eighth in high jump (1.60) and had a solid performance in the long jump (5.17).

Brett and Majka qualified for the SUNYAC championships in all five events.

Other SUNYAC qualifiers were Sarah Furman (West Berne/Berne-Knox-Westerlo) in the 5,000 meters (19:33.97), Jess Gniazdowski (Arcade/Pioneer) in the 100-meter hurdles (:17.19), Allyssa Kline (Newark) in the 100-meter hurdles (:17.49) and the 100 meters (:13.63), and Grace Moore (Fredonia) in the 100-meter hurdles (:16.38).

The 4x100 meter relay of Brett, Gniazdowski, Moore and Kline finished fifth.

On the men's side, Carl Caughell (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield) finished eighth in the 110-meter hurdles (:15.91) and Rob Fallon (East Northport/Northport) eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:18.40).

In the javelin, Ryan Norton (Batavia) finished fourth (48.84 meters), Mike Hite (Hamburg) was 10th (48.66 meters), and Kyle Paganello (Batavia) 13th (46.23 meters).

The 4x100 meter relay of Chris Rhinehart (Olean), Spencer Lefort (Java Center/Pioneer), Norton, and Webster Thomas (Windsor, Conn./St. George's College) was fourth in 43.14 seconds. Norton also qualified for SUNYACs in the 100 and 200 (:11.29 and :22.74, respectively) along with 200 runners Rhinehart (:22.56) and Thomas (:22.89).

Other SUNYAC qualifying performances were turned in by Rhinehart in the 400 (:51.36), Ron Wasik (Fredonia) in the 400 (:51.90), Danny Wright (Fredonia) in the 400 hurdles (:58.14), Lefort in the 400 hurdles (:59.81), and Greg Craft (Cheektowaga/JFK) and Cody Dahleiden (East Aurora) in the pole vault, at 4.00 and 4.27 meters, respectively.
