SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Julia Hopson (Arlington/Poughkeepsie) won her second event of the outdoor season, and sophomore Eddie Novara (Angola/Lake Shore) won his first as Fredonia State competed Saturday at the Point Loma Nazarene University Collegiate Open.
Hopson was first in the shot put (12.48 meters) and was second in the discus (32.23) meters one day after winning the hammerthrow with an NCAA Division III automatic qualifying throw. She also was part of the third-place 4-by-100 meter relay along with sophomore Kate Brett (Webster/Webster Schroeder), freshman Cynthia Herivaux (Hopewell Junction/Arlington), and junior Alyssa Kline (Newark). They stopped the clock in 51.63 seconds.
In other women's events, Brett was third in the 100-meter high hurdles (15.69 seconds) and fourth in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (1:05.66); and sophomore Hailey Guard (Youngstown/Lewiston-Porter) ran a personal-best in the 800 meters (2:24.72).
Novara's victory came in the men's 5,000 meters (15:07.50) while junior Tom Williams (Queensbury) was third (15:19.20).
In other men's events, junior Michael Kelley (Geneseo) was second in the long jump (6.47 meters) and second in the triple jump (13.89 meters); sophomore Mac McMaill (Hemlock/Livonia) was third in the 800 meters (1:55.53); and freshman Steve Paternostro (Angola/Lake Shore) was third in the 400 intermediate hurdles (56.35 seconds).
Next meet for the Blue Devils is April 4 at the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational.
