BOSTON, Mass. -- Julia Hopson is an ECAC indoor champ for the third consecutive year.
Hopson, a senior thrower from Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (Arlington H.S.), defended her women's 20-pound weight throw title Saturday at Tufts University during the 2009 ECAC Division III Track and Field championship meet. She also won the event at the 2007 and 2008 ECAC indoor meets.
Her throw Saturday of 17.54 meters was 18 centimers short of her SUNYAC-record personal-best throw last winter. The national runner-up as a junior, Hopson is currently No. 2 in all of NCAA Division III. This year's NCAA meet is next Friday and Saturday at Terre Haute, Ind.
Two other Blue Devils competed Saturday at the ECAC meet. Juniors Jackie Majka (Depew) and Michael Kelley (Geneseo) were entered in the women's and men's long jump, respectively. Majka also participated in the women's high jump and cleared a season-best 1.62 meters to tie for fifth in the event.
