ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men finished third of 13 teams, the women sixth of 14, at the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational.
The highlight for either team was an NCAA provisional qualifying 400-meter hurdle run by junior Kate Brett (Webster/Webster-Schroeder). Her 1:03.90 personal-best won the event. Brett was also second in the women's 100-meter high hurdles, one-hundredths of one second behind the winner, Blue Devil freshman Grace Moore (Fredonia). Moore broke the tape in :15.91 seconds, Brett in :15.92.
Senior distance runner Sarah Furman (West Berne/Berne-Knox-Westerlo) was first in the 5,000 meters in 18:40.37. Meanwhile, Blue Devil women were second, fourth, and fifth in the pole vault. Chelsea Caruso (Falconer), a freshman, cleared 2.95 meters, fellow freshman Jessica Gnaizdowski (Arcade/Pioneer) cleared 2.80 meters, and junior Emma Gaskell (New Woodstock/Cazenovia) 2.50 meters. In the shot put, freshman Kathleen Goodberlet (Victor) was sixth with a throw of 9.29 metersm, while Gniazdowski was seventh in the 100-meter hurdles in :17.22.
The Blue Devil men had two first-place finishers. Nick Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen), a junior, won the 800 meters in 1:54.44, and was second to sophomore teammate Eddie Novara (Angola/Lake Shore) in the 5,000 meters. Novara broke the 15-minute barrier with a 14:59.40 clocking, while Guarino followed in 15:05.73. Tom Williams (Queensbury), a senior, was fifth (15:13.73).
In other events, sophomore Carl Caughell (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) was second in the 110-meter high hurdles (:15.71); freshman Matthew Johnston (Olean) was fourth in the same event (:15.96); sophomore Andrew Charsky (Castleton-on-Hudson/Maple Hill) was second in the triple jump (13.35 meters) and fifth in the long jump (6.34 meters); and junior Greg Craft (Cheektowaga/JFK) was second in the pole vault (4.10 meters).
Also, freshman Chris Rhinehart (Olean) was second in the 200 meters (:23.19) and fourth in the 400 (:51.95), with both events affected by a headwind; sophomore Danny Wright (Fredonia) scored a solid personal-record in the 400-meter hurdles (:56.87) to finish third; while freshman Rob Fallon (East Northport/Northport) had a personal-record in the steeplechase (9:58.51) and finished fourth.
Other fourth-place finishers were junior Ryan Norton (Batavia) in the 200 meters (:23.44), and junior Mike Hite (Hamburg) in the javelin (44.12 meters). Spencer LeFort (Java Center/Pioneer), a freshman, was fifth in the high jump (1.83 meters), sophomore Ron Wasik (Fredonia) seventh in the 400 meters (:52.31), and junior David "Mac" McMahill (Hemlock/Livonia) eighth in the 1,500 meters (4:10.83).
