FREDONIA, N.Y. -- One Fredonia State runner qualified for nationals and one moved up the national rankings Saturday at separate venues.
Running at the Penn Relays, junior Nick Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen) was timed at 4:07 in the mile to automatically qualify for the NCAA Division III championships next month (May 27-28-29) at Baldwin-Wallace College. He finished eighth in the race and was the second collegian finisher in a field that included several professional runners.
Guarino won the indoor mile in March at the NCAA championship meet.
At the SUNY G Open at Geneseo, junior Kate Brett (Webster/Webster-Schroeder) lowered her 400-meter hurdles time to 1:03.22. It is a provisional qualifying time and just short of the automatic qualifying standard. She won the event. She also won the 100-meter high hurdles in 15.77 seconds.
Other top performers Saturday at the SUNY G were:
Sarah Furman (West Berne/Berne-Knox-Westerlo), a senior, won the women's 10,000 meters in school-record time. Her 38:20.16 was more than one-half previous school mark.
Jessica Gniazdowski (Arcade/Pioneer), a freshman, tied for second in the women's pole vault with a clearance of 2.95 meters, while freshman Grace Moore (Fredonia) was third in the 100-meter high hurdles in a time of 16.02 seconds.
The quartet of Brett, Moore, Gniazdowski, and senior Allyssa Kline (Newark) was third in the women's 4-by-100 meter relay in 51.86 seconds.
On the men's side, senior Tom Williams (Queensbury) won the 10,000 meters in 31:50.74, while freshman Spencer LeFort (Java Center/Pioneer) cleared 1.89 meters to win the high jump.
In the 800 meters, David "Mac" McMahill (Hemlock/Livonia) was clocked in 1:54.61 and finished second in the 800 meters, while sophomore Andrew Charsky (Castleton-On-Hudson/Maple Hill) was second in the triple jump at 13.39 meters.
In the pole vault, sophomore Cody Dahleiden (East Aurora) was third with a clearance of 4.15 meters. Two Blue Devil men finished fourth in their respective events: junior Mike Hite (Hamburg) in the javelin with a throw of 46.71 meters; and sophomore Carl Caughell (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield) in the 110-meter high hurdles with 15.91 seconds.
The Blue Devils compete next Saturday at Roberts Wesleyan.
