ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State senior thrower Julia Hopson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) defended her titles in two events, setting records in both, while competing in the SUNYAC championship meet Friday at the College at Oneonta.

Hopson broke her own school record in the shot put with an NCAA provisional toss of 12.94 meters. She also set SUNYAC championship meet and facility records in the hammer throw with a seasonal-best 55.70 meters, which exceeds the NCAA automatic qualifying distance. She had already qualified for nationals in the event.

In two other final events held Friday, junior Jackie Majka (Depew) went 5.13 meters in the women's long jump to finish third, while junior Tom Williams (Queensbury) covered the men's 10,000 meters in 32:43.05, also good for a third-place finish.

In qualifying events, the sophomore duo of Nick Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen) and David "Mac" McMahill (Hemlock/Livonia) had the first- and second-best times, respectively, in the men's 800 meters. The final is Saturday.

Also, sophomore Kate Brett (Webster/Webster-Schroeder) had the second-best time in the 100-meter high hurdles (:15.57) and the third-best time in the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.16).

The meet resumes at 10 a.m. Saturday.
