BEREA, Ohio -- Fredonia State juniors Nick Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen) and Kate Brett (Webster/Webster Schroeder) competed at the NCAA Division III National Meet at Baldwin Wallace College on Thursday. Guarino in the 1500-meter run, and Brett in the 400-meter hurdles.
Guarino finished fifth in his heat – good enough to qualify for the finals – in a time of 3:52.03. He will attempt to win his second national title this year in the field of 12 at 1:30 Saturday. He won the title in the men's mile during the indoor season.
Will Yocum of Amherst (Mass.) College was the pacesetter at 3:50.77. The top four in each heat and the next four fastest finishers advanced to the final.
Brett finished fifth in her heat in a time of 63.80. She did not qualify for the finals. Jamie Simmons of M.I.T. turned in the top time of 60.52. Eight women advanced the final on Saturday -- each heat winner plus the next five fastest finishers.
