(POOL PLAY RESULTS AND HIGHLIGHTS)
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Blue Devils wasted no time in taking control of their own destiny by defeating Brockport 3-0 in the opening match of SUNYAC Pool Play on Friday. The Devils, who fell to Brockport 3-1 in the first round of Pool Play in September, needed a sweep to claim the potential tiebreaker, should both teams finish with the same record. Both teams now sit at 5-1 in the conference.
The Devils' other win was a 3-0 victory over Buffalo State (1-5, SUNYAC, 17-12 overall), while Brockport (5-1 SUNYAC, 16-13 overall) downed Oswego, 3-0. Oswego falls to 0-6 in the conference, and 7-21 overall.
Should the Devils handle Geneseo --which is no small task -- and Oswego on Saturday, they would win the Western Division.
Geneseo (4-2 SUNYAC, 19-15 overall) was the other double winner. They downed both Buffalo State and Oswego by identical 3-0 scores.
In the final match of the evening, Brockport defeated Oswego, 3-0.
In the Brockport match, the Devils won by scores of 25-20, 25-22 and 25-12. Kaitlinn Erdmann (Randolph/Randolph), Lindsey Olson (Portville/Portville) and Chelsea Senn (Hamburg/Frontier) paced the offense with seven kills apiece. Erdmann added five blocks and three service aces, while Brittany Lis (Lancaster/Lancaster) had four aces and Jenna Tatu (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) three. For the match, the Devils combined for 12 aces.
Lis added 27 assists, and Tatu led the team with 11 digs.
Against Buffalo State, the Devils claimed 25-8, 25-14 and 25-17 wins. Brittany Christian (Jamestown/Jamestown) had 13 kills. The Devils were again sharp with their serves, as Sarah Zureck (Lancaster/St. Mary's) delivered eight aces, and Lis seven. The Devils had 19 as a team.
Lis added 29 assists and eight digs.
The Devils also extended their win streak to 10 straight.
Play continues Saturday in Dods Hall beginning at 10 a.m.
