FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Defending SUNYAC champ Fredonia State nailed down the No. 1 seed from SUNYAC's West Division with a pair of 3-0 wins Saturday during conference pool play weekend at Dods Hall.
The Blue Devils emerged as the clear-cut top seed with a 25-14, 25-13, and 25-18 victory over Geneseo, followed by a 25-15, 25-9, 25-19 win over Oswego.
Brockport fell one game back of the Blue Devils with a 3-2 loss to Geneseo, while Geneseo remained as the No. 3 seed.
Buffalo State and Oswego, the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds, respectively, failed to qualify for the conference tournament.
By earning the No. 1 seed from the West, the Blue Devils -- 21-10 overall and 7-1 in the SUNYAC -- assured themselves a first-round bye in the six-team gathering, to be held Nov. 5-6-7 on the home floor of the East's No. 1 seed. The home site rotates between the East and West top seeds from year to year.
Junior middle blocker Kaitlin Erdmann (Randolph) had 11 kills, freshman outside hitter Lindsey Olson (Portville) 10 kills, sophomore setter Brittany Lis (Lancaster) 13 digs and 26 assists, and sophomore middle blocker Chelsea Senn (Hamburg/Frontier) three blocks in the 3-0 victory over Geneseo Saturday morning.
The Blue Devils extended their winning streak to 12 matches with a 3-0 Saturday afternoon victory over Oswego. Senior mmiddle blocker Jen Reese (Barton/Tioga) and junior middle blocker Brittany Christian (Jamestown) had nine kills each, sophomore opposite Audrey Zimmerman (East Aurora) added eight kills, Lis had 20 sets and sophomore Jessica Ernstberger (Rochester/Greece Arcadia) added nine sets, while Lis and junior libero Danielle McNeil (West Seneca/St. Mary's of Lancaster) each had eight digs. In addition, Erdmann had four blocks and Reese and sophomore opposite Jennifer Newhouse (Amherst) had two blocks each.
The Blue Devils have one more weekend tournament before SUNYAC competition -- the Vassar Tournament next Friday and Saturday.
