FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State will play 10 home matches during the 2009 season, including four during SUNYAC Western Division Pool Play on Oct. 23 and Oct. 24.
The schedule, released today, also includes four games during the Blue Devil Invitational and two stand-alone home matches.
The Blue Devils, defending champs of the SUNYAC, will play host to the four other Western Division teams -- Buffalo State, Geneseo, Brockport, and Oswego -- on Oct. 23 and Oct. 24. The outcome of those matches combined with the results from pool play Sept. 25 and Sept. 26 at Brockport will determine seeding for the SUNYAC Tournament starting Nov. 5 at the Eastern Division's No. 1 seed.
Fredonia State was the No. 1 seed in the West last fall, earned the home-court advantage, and won the SUNYAC title by defeating New Paltz, the top seed from the East. The Blue Devils automatically qualified for their first-ever NCAA appearance and were one of 16 teams still in action before being eliminated.
The 37-match 2009 regular season begins Sept. 4 against Skidmore and Rochester in the SUNY Cortland Red Dragon Classic (Sept. 4-5). The Blue Devils are also entered in weekend tournaments at Nazareth College (Sept. 11-12), Rochester Institute of Technology (Sept. 18-19), and Vassar College (Oct. 30-31).
In addition, the Blue Devils will play single road matches at Allegheny (Sept. 15), at Nazareth (Sept. 30), at St. John Fisher (Oct. 6), and at the University of Rochester (Oct. 8), and three matches in one day (Oct. 17) at Washington & Jefferson vs. the host team, Geneva, and Mount Union.
The first home match is Sept. 8 vs. D'Youville. The other single home match is Oct. 20 vs. Penn State Behrend.
Meanwhile, the six-team Blue Devil Invitational is set for Oct. 2 and Oct. 3. In addition to the Blue Devils, the teams competing will be Elmira, St. John Fisher, Ithaca, Cortland, and Gallaudet.
All home matches will be played in Dods Hall.
