Women's volleyball 

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Fredonia State opened its 2008 season with a split of two matches Friday at the Cortland Red Dragon Classic.

The Blue Devils (1-1) first fell to Montclair State, 3-1, by set scores of 25-17, 25-17, 18-25 and 27-25. Amy Bertrando (Wesetfield) collected 12 kills, Jenna Tatu (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) seven kills, Brittany Lis (Lancaster) and Sarah Zureck (Lancaster/St. Mary's) 11 digs each, and Kaitlin Erdmann (Randolph) six blocks.

A 3-0 victory over Plattsburgh followed. Bertrando had 16 more kills, Alyssa Torpy (West Henrietta/ Rush-Henrietta) 19 assists, Lis 16 assists, Mallory Swanson (Jamestown) six kills and four aces, and Chelsea Senn (Hamburg/Frontier) five kills. Set scores were 25-17, 25-20 and 25-23.

The Blue Devils meet Nazareth at noon Saturday, and either Rochester or Skidmore later in the afternoon.
