BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Fredonia State split two matches Saturday to finish 3-1 in the first of two SUNYAC West Division Pool Play tournaments this fall.
The Blue Devils (9-9 overall) nipped Geneseo in the first match by set scores of 25-14, 25-18, 22-25, 22-25, and 16-14. Pool Play host Brockport then scored a 3-1 victory by scores of 23-25, 25-23, 25-22 and 26-24.
It was the first Pool Play loss by the Blue Devils in two seasons.
Against Geneseo, Lindsey Olson (Portville) led the Blue Devils with 14 kills and 12 digs. Also, Kaitlin Erdmann (Randolph) had 11 kills, three service aces, and 10 digs; Danielle McNeil (West Seneca/St. Mary's of Lancaster) forged 31 digs; and Jenna Tatu (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) finished with 10 kills and three blocks.
In the Brockport match, Erdmann was the top hitter with 16 kills in addition to five digs and two blocks. Andrea Zimmerman (East Aurora) chipped in with 12 kills, five service aces, and four blocks while McNeil had four aces and 11 digs, Brittany Lis (Lancaster) 27 assists and nine digs, and Jessica Ernstberger (Rochester/Greece Arcadia) 14 assists and seven digs.
The next round of West Division Pool Play will be played in Fredonia State's Dods Hall -- Oct. 23 and 24. In the meantime, the Blue Devils' next match is Wednesday at Nazareth.
