CORTLAND, N.Y -- Fredonia State opened its 2009 season with a 3-2 loss to Skidmore, followed by a 3-0 victory over Rochester, on the first day of the Cortland Red Dragon Classic.
The Blue Devils lost games by two, three, and two points in a 24-26, 22-25, 25-19, 25-21 and 14-16 setback to Skidmore. Brittany Lis had 20 assists and 15 digs, Sarah Zureck 18 digs, ad Jenna Tatu eight kills and six blocks.
The Blue Devils bounced back for a 25-21, 25-22 and 25-21 victory over Rochester. Lis had another 18 assists and eight digs, Danielle McNeil collected a team-high 10 digs, Mallory Swanson and Jenna Tatu had six kills each, and Audrey Zimmerman added five kills.
The Blue Devils return to action at noon Saturday against either Nazareth or Daemen, depending on the outcome of matches later Friday. They will also play a second match Saturday afternoon.
