ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State lost its first SUNYAC game of the season to the Oneonta Red Dragons, 68-46.
The Blue Devils fell to 3-1 in the conference and 7-3 overall. They went into the game on a six-game winning streak. The Red Dragons improved to 6-0 in the SUNYAC and 8-5 overall as freshman Gabi Regan (Troy/Columbia) came off the bench to score 15 points, one of five Oneonta players in double figures.
Oneonta took control of the game midway through the first half and never looked back. The Red Dragons got off to a rough start shooting, but finished the contest shooting 45 percent from the floor. Oneonta was a consistent 13-of-29 in both halves. Oneonta forced 21 turnovers and had 13 steals. The 21 turnovers led to 22 points.
Senior Katie Landy (Jamestown/Southwestern) was the only Blue Devil to reach double figures as she scored 11 points. She also grabbed seven rebounds, while sophomore Caroline Hourihan (Buffalo/Nardin) added eight points and nine rebounds, and sophomore Nicole Calbi (Olean) was credited with five assists.
Neither squad started the contest shooting very well from the field, as the score was only 6-6 at the 12:36 mark. The Red Dragons asserted themselves with seven unanswered to build a nine-point lead with just under nine minutes to go in the opening half. They continued their hot shooting over the final nine minutes of the half and went into the break with a 35-21 lead. The Red Dragon reserves outscored Fredonia State's bench 18-3 in the first half, led by Regan's nine first-half points. The Red Dragons continued to add to their lead and twice led by as many as 28 points in the second half.
Fredonia State stays out east for a Saturday afternoon game at New Paltz. The opening tip is 2 p.m.
