BOX SCORE: NEW PALTZ 71, BLUE DEVILS 59

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- In a game that featured 21 lead changes and 15 ties, the New Paltz Hawks pulled away in the final five minutes to claim a 71-59 SUNYAC victory over Fredonia State in women’s basketball action on Saturday.

New Paltz used a lay up from Carly Minehan with 5:06 remaining to break a 55-55 tie, giving the Hawks a lead they would not surrender.

The Devils held a slim 38-36 lead going into the half. Merissa Gaeta (Kirkwood/Windsor) had 10 of her 14 points in the period.

Katie Landy (Jamestown) and Gaeta each tallied 14 points to lead the Blue Devils. Gaeta added a game-high 11 rebounds. Caroline Hourihan (Buffalo/Nardin) chipped in eight points and Nicole Calbi (Olean) had six points and four assists.

Seniors Kristen Caban and Maggie Farrell led the Hawks with 16 points apiece. Farrell finished 10-of-12 from the free throw line. Fellow senior Nicole Sarcone added 12 points. Carly Minehan added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Hawks upped their record to 9-4 overall and 6-1 in the conference.

The Blue Devils fall to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the SUNYAC. They play host to Brockport on Tuesday.
