FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women’s basketball team remained perfect at home this season, downing Brockport, 66-63, on Tuesday afternoon. The Devils are now 7-0 in Steele Hall, while improving their SUNYAC record to 4-2. They are 8-4 overall.

The game was close for most of the first half until Brockport pulled away in the final five minutes. Tied 25-all, the Golden Eagles went on a 13-0 run. Eight of the points came from the free throw line. Whitney Smith scored the first five points, while Rachel Csakany scored the final six points of the run. Rebeecca Monteith also added a pair of free throws.

Csakany and Smith combined for 11 points each to lead all scorers at the half. Csakany added nine rebounds. Brockport would lead 39-28 at the break. They were aided by 12 of 14 free-throw shooting in a half that featured eight lead changes and 10 ties.

The Devils were paced by Katie Landy (Jamestown) with seven points.

Fredonia State regrouped at halftime and came out on fire. A 24-7 run would give them a 52—46 lead halfway through the period. Grace Moore (Fredonia) keyed the run with 11 of the Devils’ first 13 points.

Brockport would eventually pull within four, 64-60, following a Csakany layup with 1:27 left to play.

After a missed Blue Devil free throw, Monteith nailed a three-pointer for Brockport making it 64-63 with :59 seconds left to play.

Monteith then fouled Nicole Calbi (Olean) at the other end. Calbi made the first shot. Merissa Gaeta (Kirkwood/Windsor) grabbed the rebound on the miss. Calbi would go back to the line with 27.2 seconds remaining and miss both. Brockport would grab the rebound off the miss.

Following a timeout with 13.0 seconds remaining, the Blue Devils were called for a foul on the inbound, sending Smith to the line for a one-and-one.

Gaeta would again grab the miss, then kicked the ball to Calbi, who was fouled and sent to the line again. She made the second of two shots to seal the win.

Erica Yohannes missed a long three at the buzzer to give the final.

A trio of Blue Devils reached double figures in scoring. Landy was tops with 18, and Gaeta and Moore had 11 apiece. Landy added nine boards.

Brockport was led by Smith with 20 points and Csakany with 16 points and 13 rebounds. The Golden Eagles fall to 3-10 overall, and 1-5 in the conference.
