OSWEGO, N.Y. -- A balanced offense carried Oswego over Fredonia State, 55-45, in SUNYAC action Saturday.
The Lakers (8-7, 5-3 SUNYAC) were led by Kayla Ryan with 10 points, the only member of her team to score in double figures. Three teammates had eight points each, one had seven, and nine players overall had at least one point.
The Blue Devils' top scorers were Caroline Hourihan (Buffalo/Nardin) and Katie Landy (Jamestown/Southwestern) with 14 points each. The loss dropped Fredonia State to 8-6 overall and 4-4 in the conference. Landy also had a team-high seven rebounds.
The Lakers raced out to a 9-1 lead in the first three minutes, only to have the Blue Devils battle back to tie at 14-14 on a layup by Landy. The teams were tied twice more before the Blue Devils took their first lead, 20-18, on another basket by Landy with 3:18 left in the first half. The Lakers pulled even again and the teams went into halftime tied 24-24.
The Blue Devils opened the second half with a 5-0 run on a basket by Grace Moore (Fredonia) and a three-pointer by Hourihan. The result was a 29-24 lead, the team's largest of the game. The Blue Devils hung onto the lead until 14:13 remained. A basket by Oswego's Colleen McCready resulted in a 32-31 Laker advantage. McCready's basket was part of a 10-0 Laker run and a 38-31 deficit for the Blue Devils. They cut the Oswego lead to 43-40 on a basket by Merissa Gaeta (Kirkwood/Windsor) after two empty possessions.
