FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State held off SUNY Cobleskill, 50-49, in a season-opening game Saturday afternoon at Steele Hall.

Blue Devil senior forward Angela Pucciarelli (Fredonia) led all scorers with 22 points, her Fredonia State high, and grabbed 12 rebounds. Junior forward Merissa Gaeta (Kirkwood/Windsor) added 10 points, all in the second half, and had eight rebounds.

Brittany Armstrong (Schenectady/Mohonasen) and Kaliegh Lussier (East Greenbush/Columbia) had 11 points each for Cobleskill.

The Blue Devils (1-0) led throughout the second half but saw their lead dwindle in the final minute. Cobleskill's Heidi Anderson (Canajoharie), fouled while shooting from the perimeter, converted one of three free throws to cut the Blue Devil lead to two points.

Cobleskill's Shelley Pierson (Watervliet) missed a mid-range jumpshot, but her team maintained possession. Following a time-out, the Fighting Tigers ran a play and Pierson was fouled underneath as time expired. She made the first attempt of the one-and-one but missed the second and the game was over.
