FREDONIA, N.Y. -- A strong second half carried the Fredonia State women's basketball team past Geneva College, 79-64, on Saturday evening.
The Devils trailed for most of the first half -- by as many as 10 points -- and fell behind by 11 early in the second before taking over the game.
A basket by Geneva's Christine Carugati at 17:04 of the second half put the Golden Tornado's up, 47-36, giving them their biggest lead of the game.
From there, the Devils would gradually creep back, cutting the lead to five, 52-47 at the 11:15 mark.
After a jumper by Geneva's Valerie Hamilton made it 54-47, the Devils would go on a tear. A 21-0 run gave the Devils a 68-54 lead with just over 6:00 remaining. A three-pointer by freshman Grace Moore (Fredonia/Fredonia) at 9:00 gave the Devils their first lead since they led 11-10 early in the first half. A pair of three-pointers and a pair of free throws from junior Caroline Hourihan (Buffalo/Nardin) keyed the rally.
The Devils never led by less than nine points the rest of the way.
A fast pace on the offensive end highlighted the first half. Geneva shot a sizzling 62 percent (16 for 26) from the field, while the Devils converted 55 percent (16 for 29). Geneva led 41-34 at the break.
The Devils kept up the hot shooting, hitting 52 percent (13 for 25) from the field in the second half. The also Devils upped the defensive pressure, as Geneva tailed off to 32 percent shooting. The Devils defense caused 16 second-half turnovers and 11 steals. Their aggressive offense also cause Geneva to commit 18 of their 22 fouls in the second half.
Offensively, the Devils were paced five scorers in double figures. Senior Katie Landy (Jamestown/Jamestown) had game-highs of 20 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Liz Wierbinski (Camillus/West Genesee) had a career-high 12 points -- all in the second half -- to go along with some stellar defensive play. Moore, Hourihan and sophomore Nicole Calbi (Olean/Olean) each finished with 11 points. Moore added five steals and five rebounds.
The Devils outrebounded Geneva 35-24 and had 20 steals for the game.
Geneva falls to 2-3 on the season.
The Devils (2-2) are off until next weekend, when they play host to SUNYAC rival Buffalo State on Friday.
