FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Blue Devils opened their SUNYAC campaign with a 51-47 win over Buffalo State.
The Devils came out fast, scoring the first eight points. Defensively, they caused turnovers on eight of Buffalo State’s first nine possessions, including seven steals. The Devils had eight steals in the first six minutes.
Buff State eventually tied the game at 13-all at 10:30 with a layup by Kristin Ritch. Alyssa Kinney sank the second of two free throws to give the Bengals their first lead of the game, 14-13, at 9:42.
There would be two more lead changes and two ties before the end of the half. The Bengals would use a free throw by Staci McElroy to take a 25-24 lead at the break. Katie Landy (Jamestown/Jamestown) led the Devils with six points. Buffalo State’s Jessica Clark led all scorers with seven.
The game would remain close throughout the second half, the biggest lead at 49-43 Fredonia State with 3:00 minutes left.
From there, the Bengals would eventually pull within two, 49-47, with 42.3 seconds left following a Clark layup.
After a Blue Devil timeout, the Devils used the full 30 seconds, turning the ball over on a shot-clock violation, leaving 14.3 seconds. Following a Buffalo State timeout, Grace Moore (Fredonia/Fredonia) stripped the ball from McElroy.
Buffalo State then fouled Landy with 3.2 seconds remaining. She sank both free throws to give the Devils the 51-47 victory.
Landy led all scorers with 17 points. Merrisa Gaeta (Kirkwood/Windsor) added seven points. Nicole Calbi (Olean/Olean) had six points, seven rebounds and four steals.
For Buffalo State ( 1-3 overall, 0-1 SUNYAC), Clark had 13 points and McElroy added 12. Dee Layne had eight points and 11 rebounds.
The Devils improve to 3-2 overall, and 1-0 in SUNYAC play. The play host to Allegheny in a non-conference matchup next Friday in Steele Hall.
