BOX SCORE: New Paltz 78, Blue Devils 77

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- A pair of buzzer beaters wasn’t enough as the Blue Devils fell in double overtime, 78-77, to New Paltz on Friday.

With regulation winding down, Caroline Hourihan (Buffalo/Nardin) nailed a 25 footer as the Devils erased a 14-point half-time deficit to send the game into overtime.

As the first overtime came to a close and the Devils down 71-69, Nicole Calbi (Olean) followed a pair of missed Blue Devil shots with a layup falling backwards to send the game into a second overtime.

In the second overtime, the Devils held a 77-76 lead with 12.6 seconds remaining. New Paltz inbounded the ball, and Maggie Farrell cut to the hoop to score the game’s final bucket and give the visiting Hawks a 78-77 win.

The Devils opened with the game’s first six points, before New Paltz answered with the next six. New Paltz would take the lead, 16-14, on a three pointer by Kahsyrah Bryant with 11:34 left in the half. The lead would hold up until Hourihan nailed her regulation-ending three pointer.

New Paltz would lead 40-26 at the break.  Sierra Finch (Randolph) led the Devils with seven points off the bench. New Paltz was paced by Alexandra McCullough with 11 points – also off the bench.

With time winding down in the second half, the Devils pulled within four, 59-55, on a Merissa Gaeta (Kirkwood/Windsor) layup at 1:55.

Two possessions, later Katie Landy (Jamestown) was fouled with 36.7 remaining and sank the first of two free throws to make it 59-56 and a one-possession game.

The Devils then fouled Farrell with 30.0 seconds left. Farrell nailed the first free throw, putting the Hawks up four, 60-56.

Landy then hit a layup and was fouled with 7.3 seconds to go. She made the first and missed the second, making it 60-58.

McCullough grabbed the rebound for New Paltz and was quickly fouled. She made the second of two free throws to make it 61-58, New Paltz.

The Devils hurried the ball down the court and Hourihan nailed the long-range bomb at the buzzer to send the game into the first overtime.

Fredonia State was led by Hourihan with 18 points and nine rebounds. Gaeta added 17 points and 13 boards, while Landy had 17 and seven.

New Paltz (13-9, 10-5 SUNYAC) had five players in double digits: Farrell with 18, McCullough with 14, Maliqua Fisher with 13 and 10 points each from Carly Minehan and Kristen Sitek.

The Devils, now 10-10 overall and 6-8 in the conference, take on Oneonta at 2 p.m. Saturday.
