FREDONIA, N.Y. -- SUNY Geneseo defeated the Blue Devils 71-65 in overtime in SUNYAC women's basketball action at Steele Hall Friday evening.
The loss eliminated the Devils post-season hopes, while Geneseo clinched the final post-season berth.
Geneseo started the game with a 12-0 run before the Devil's Merissa Gaeta (Kirkwood) sank a pair of free throws at 14:32. That would lead to a 28-24 Geneseo advantage at the break. Angela Pucciarelli (Fredonia) paced the Fredonia State with 11 points. Geneseo's Tracey Wangelin also had 11 points.
In the second half, the Devils fought back to tie the game 50-all on a Pucciarelli three pointer at 5:59. They took their first lead on their next possession on a Caroline Hourihan (Buffalo/Nardin) jumper.
After a couple of lead changes, Geneseo's Jamie Scordino sank a pair of free throws with 1:11 remaining to tie the game at 59 apiece. Following a missed jumper by the Devils, Geneseo grabbed the rebound and Amanda Bihr made a layup in traffic to give the Knights a 61-59 lead with 29.1 seconds remaining.
The Devils answered as Gaeta put back a rebound to tie the game, 61-61, with 17.7 to go and force overtime.
Geneseo would outscore the Devils 10-4 to claim the victory.
Pucciarelli paced the Devils with 23 points. Katie Landy (Jamestown) added 19 points and seven rebounds. Gaeta had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Geneseo improved to 5-10 in the SUNYAC, and 8-16 overall. They were led by Wangelin's 23 points. Amanda Bihr (14), Bri Dunton (13) and Scordino (10) also scored in double figures.
Fredonia State falls to 3-12 in the SUNYAC and 9-14 overall. Their season concludes on Saturday at 2 p.m. vs. Cortland.
