(BOX SCORE: Fredonia State 2, Oberlin 0)
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The combination of junior Lauren Heilweil (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) and sophomore Kaleigh Vogan (Macedon/Palmyra-Macedon) combined for all the scoring Tuesday in Fredonia State's 2-0 home win over the Oberlin Yeowomen.
Vogan assisted Heilweil on both goals, first in the 38th minute and later in the 43rd minute. For Heilweil, they were her fourth and team-leading fifth goals of the season, and her first game-winner of 2008.
The first Fredonia State goal was the result of two volleys into the box, the first by freshman Melissa Cummiskey (Clarence) onto the foot of Vogan. She volleyed into Heilweil, who took a hard shot from inside the box and to the left of Oberlin freshman goalkeeer Kelsey Atkinson (Wilmette, Ill.).
The second goal was on a breakaway, Vogan passing ahead to Heilweil near midfield. She dribbled into the clear and chipped a mid-range shot past the drawn-out goalkeeper.
Senior goalkeeper Becky Scroger (Spencerport) made four saves for her first shutout of the season and her 21st as a Blue Devil. She is the school record-holder in the category.
The Blue Devils held a wide territorial advantage throughout the game. They earned 12 corners kicks, to none for the Yeowmen (3-5-1), and had a 23-7 advantage in shots, but only six of the shots were on goal. Atkinson made four saves.
The Blue Devils return to SUNYAC competition for their next game, 1 p.m. Saturday at Morrisville State.
