ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Lauren Heilweil scored three goals, including the game-winner in the second overtime, as Fredonia State closed out its regular season with a 4-3 victory over Elmira College.
Heilweil (Binghamton/Chenango Forks), a junior forward, scored from 15 yards away with 3:15 remaining in the second 10-minute overtime to lift the Blue Devils to 11-6-1. Elmira fell to 3-13-1.
Sophomore midfielder Christa Morgante (East Amherst/Williamsville East) gave Fredonia State a 1-0 lead when she converted a penalty kick 4:11 into the game. Elmira struck for its first goal at 8:05 as Moira Ghent scored unassisted before the Blue Devils reclaimed the lead, 2-1, on Heilweil's first goal of the game -- assisted by freshman forward Reilly Condidorio (LeRoy) -- in the 17th minute.
The Eagles tied and took the lead, 3-2, on goals by Kaitlin Borrelli and Mary Corey, the latter in the second minute of the second half. Heilweil countered with her second goal of the game, assisted by Morgante, in the 67th minute. Heilweil's third goal of the game, and 10th of the season, was unassisted. It was her third game-winning goal of the season.
The Blue Devils had a 23-17 advantage in shots and an 8-7 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Becky Scroger (Spencerport) was called on to made six saves.
Unless the Blue Devils put in for and receive an ECAC Upstate Tournament bid, the game Tuesday marked the final appearance for Scroger and five other seniors: forward Mimi Blackman (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon), midfielder Jacki Borcyk (Rochester/Greece Odyssey), and defenders Sarah Stewart (Jamestown), Meghan Thoin (Buffalo/Mount St. Mary's), and Amber Balseca (Newfane). Over their four seasons, the Blue Devils are 40-30-10.
