POTSDAM, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's soccer team scored three goals in the span of ten minutes to take control en route to a 4-1 win over Clarkson on Sunday. For the weekend, they finished third in the Lotto Classic Tounament.
Lauren Heilweil (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) scored the game's first goal in the 14th minute. Meghan Thoin (Buffalo/Mt. St. Mary's) moved the ball upfield, passing to Heilweil who scored on a long shot to the far side.
Just over a minute later, Julie LaPolla (Penfield) would give the Devils a 2-0 advantage, blasting a shot past the Clarkson keeper, Stephanie Collins. Reilly Condidorio (Leroy) and Heilweil were credited with assists.
Heilweil would add an unassisted marker in the 24th minute. She blasted a shot that Collins was able to deflect. Heilweil gathered the rebound and made good on her second chance.
Laura Hartung (Rochester/Greece Arcadia) would score the Devil's only goal of the second half, giving them a 4-0 advantage, in the 61st minute. She was assisted by Lisa Curtis (Rochester/Greece Arcadia).
Clarkson was able to avoid the whitewash as Karen Streeter beat Blue Devil keeper Becky Scroger (Spencerport) in the 72nd minute.
Scroger finished with two saves. Paula Culhane (Williamson/Gates-Chili) also made a pair of saves for the Devils, playing the final 13:11.
Clarkson used a pair of keepers as well. Collins made five saves while surrendering three goals in the game's first half. Cait Spaeth registered two saves, allowing one goal in the final 45:00.
Fredonia State outshot Clarkson, 20-13.
Three Devils were named to the All Tournament team: Heilweil, Condidorio, and LaPolla.
The Blue Devils (1-1) have their home opener Friday in the annual Days Inn Tournament. They play host to Grove City at 5 p.m., then play Penn State Behrend at 7 p.m. Saturday to begin a string of eight straight home games.
