FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Down 1-0 at halftime, Fredonia State won its fifth straight game with a 2-1 home win over St. John Fisher at University Stadium.
Penfield High graduates Julie LaPolla, a sophomore forward, and freshman defender Emily Beh accounted for the game-tying goal in the 58th minute. Beh hustled to a 50-50 ball near the left corner and fired a cross into the box. A header by LaPolla sailed into the top of the net. It was her second goal of the season.
The game-winner came off the foot of senior Jacki Borcyk (Rochester/Greece Odyssey). Rushing up from right outside defender, Borcyk stepped into a clearing attempt and drilled a hard, high shot into the top of the net from about 40 yards out. The goal, Borcyk's first of the season, was unassisted.
The Blue Devils improved to 5-1-0.
Senior goalkeeper Becky Scroger (Spencerport) was credited with six saves, while her counterpart, St. John Fisher junior Ashley Martin (Marcellus) had three saves. Sophomore forward/midfielder Megan Gee (Dansville/Arkport) scored the lone goal by the Cardinals (1-3-0). Her quick shot from just outside the box came following a short cross by freshman Jessica Kowalski (East Amherst/Williamsville East) in the 30th minute.
