FREDONIA, N.Y. -- St. Lawrence's Kristina Peso (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont./Holy Cross) and Megan Howard (Shelburne, Vt./Champlain Valley) each had one goal and one assist to lead her team to a 3-0 victory over Fredonia State in the first round of the Clarion Hotel Soccer Classic at University Stadium.
The Blue Devils brought a 3-1-0 record into the game, while the Saints were 2-1-0.
The Saints (3-1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute as Peso scored on a rebound off a shot by Katherine Polido (Stow, Mass./Nashoba Regional). Howard made it 2-0 three minutes into the second half after Peso dribbled up the left side, cut back, and centered a pass onto Howard's foot. Betsy Lucas (Mequoin, Wis.) added an insurance goal in the final minute on a short cross from Howard.
Abby van Geldern (Rowayton, Conn./Brien McMahon) was in the St. Lawrence goal. She finished with five saves, including a diving stop on a direct kick by Christa Morgante (East Amherst/Williamsville East) with 10:31 remaining. Minutes earlier, the Blue Devils' Julie LaPolla (Penfield) put a shot behind van Geldern but the ball banged off the crossbar. Van Galdern also turned aside a shot from the short left wing by Melissa Cummiskey (Clarence) in the 87th minute.
Meaghan Meszaros (Selden/Newfield) was in net for the Blue Devils and made three saves.
The women's portion of the tournament began with a Friday afternoon game between the Penn State Behrend Lions and the University of Rochester Yellowjackets. After a scoreless regulation, the Yellowjackets (3-0-1) emerged with a 1-0 victory on a goal by Ellen Coleman (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wauwatosa) in the 100th minute. Coleman scored with a header following a cross from Marissa Braverman (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin).
The Yellowjackets (3-0-1) had a 25-5 shooting advantage and earned the shutout for Celeste Hornbach (Saratoga Springs), who had three saves. Kayla Frost (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) was credited with 15 saves in net for the Lions (3-1-0).
The tournament resumes with two more games Saturday: Rochester vs. St. Lawrence at 2:30 p.m., and Fredonia State vs. Behrend at 7 p.m.
