FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State and Penn State Behrend played to a 2-2 tie in the Clarion Hotel Soccer Classic third-place game Saturday night at University Stadium.
Melissa Cummiskey (Clarence) had a goal and one assist for the Blue Devils (3-2-0 before) while Lauren Heilweil (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) continued to move up the Fredonia State all-time goals and points lists.
Penn State Behrend's Lindsey Steinsdoerfer (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) scored two goals in a six-minute span of the second half. The Lions (3-1-1) have now outscored opponents 7-1 in the second half of games this season.
Cummiskey scored in the 15th minute off a corner kick by Gwen Curtis (Rochester/Greece Arcadia). It was her second of the season. Heilweil scored her fifth of the year -- and 28th as a Blue Devil -- when she gathered in a through ball from Cummiskey, broke into the clear, a blasted a shot from just outside the 18-yard line.
Heilweil's 28 career goals is second all-time by a Blue Devil, while her 67 points is also No. 2 all-time.
The Lions cut their deficit in half, 2-1, in the 68th minute as Steinsdoerfer scored in close following a centering pass from Heather Kilmuszka (Rochester/Greece Athena). The Lions kept pressuring and Steinsdoefer scored again, this time in the 74th minute, when a ball deflected to her just to the right of Blue Devil goalkeeper Meaghan Meszaros (Seldon/Newfield).
Meszaros finished with six saves while Behrend's Kayla Frost made six stops.
Earlier Saturday, the St. Lawrence Saints won the Classic by virtue of goal-differential tiebreaker. The Saints (3-1-1) tied the University of Rochester, 1-1, in what essentially was the tournament championship game at University Stadium. Because the Saints were 3-0 winners Friday over Fredonia State, their goal differntial of plus-3 was better than Rochester's plus-1. The Yellowjackets (3-0-2) were 1-0 overtime winners over Penn State Behrend on Friday.
Rochester led 1-0 at halftime, the result of a goal by Jessica Smith (Churchville/Byron-Bergen) in the 32nd minute. Smith took a pass just inside the 18-yard box from Ellen Coleman (Wauwatosa, Wis.), took a quick turn, and slotted the ball into the left corner of the net. St. Lawrence scored the equalizer in the 50th minute on a goal by Marcelle Justison (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd). Kristina Peso (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont./Holy Cross) dribbed into the box and placed the ball just past her defender to the oncoming Justison, whose goal forged a 1-1 tie.
The Yellowjackets had a 17-15 advantage in shots with U of R's goalkeeper Celeste Hornbach (Saratoga Springs) making 10 saves. Tournament MVP Abby van Geldern (Rowayton, Conn./Brien McMahon) was credited with four saves.
