FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Is this the season Fredonia State will finally break through against Geneseo?
The answer will come when the Blue Devils (5-1-0) open the SUNYAC portion of their season 7 p.m. Saturday at University Stadium.
The teams tied 1-1 last season at Geneseo. Two seasons ago, Geneseo defeated the Blue Devils twice -- by one goal each time, including a SUNYAC Tournament game.
"We continue to get closer to getting that elusive win against them," said Fredonia State head coach Chris Case, who oversees a program which has not tasted success against Geneseo since 1994.
In the eyes of SUNYAC coaches, that win won't come this year -- or maybe it just might. Geneseo was No. 5 and the Blue Devils No. 6 in the pre-season coaches' poll. The two teams were separated by 16 poll points, which are awarded on a 11, 10, 9, 8, etc., scale.
Case believes his team, which is fighting some injuries, will need to play mistake-free soccer in order to pull off the win. Geneseo, he said, has the ability to both attack dangerously and to defend consistently.
"On the other side," he said, "I feel we have some good talent that has not shown all the way yet this year. We should (be able) to challenge Geneseo this Saturday (and) with it being the first conference game of the year, it is always important to get off to the right start. To do that we will have to play perhaps our best soccer of the year so far. Although we have found a way to win we still are lacking a few things to put together 90 minutes of good soccer."
