FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Stephanie Bergin converted a teammate's cross into the game-winning goal Saturday in Geneseo's 3-2 SUNYAC victory over Fredonia State at University Field.
Positioned in front of the net, Bergin (Middletown/Pine Bush) outmanuevered her mark and headed a well-placed pass from Melissa Beale (Penfield) over the top of Blue Devil senior goalkeeper Becky Scroger (Spencerport) in the fourth minute of the second half.
Outshot 13-7, the Blue Devils (5-2-0, 0-1-0 SUNYAC) turned up the pressure in the final minutes but could not get a shot on Geneseo goalkeeper Katie Clerkin (Stony Brook/Ward Melville).
Clerkin finished with four saves, Scroger with three.
Attempting to defeat Geneseo for the first time since 1994, the Blue Devils led twice in the game -- only to have the visiting Blue Knights (3-2-0, 1-0-0) respond quickly each time. First, junior Lauren Heilweil (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) dribbled to the top of the box and scored her third goal of the season for a 1-0 Blue Devil lead in the ninth minute. Geneseo countered in the 14th minute on a header by Corine Santariello (Fairport) off a corner kick by Jane Matejcik (Scottsville/Wheatland-Chili).
The Blue Devils regained the lead, 2-1, on a long wide-angle shot by sophomore Angela Beck (Randolph) from freshman Reilly Condidorio (Leroy) in the 42nd minute. It was Beck's first goal of the season. She was also playing her first game of 2008 after missing the first six games because of an injury.
The Fredonia State celebration had barely died down when Geneseo tied it again, this time on an own goal. A deep ball into the box was accidently deflected past Scroger by one of her teammates. The untimely bounce gave the Blue Knights the momentum heading into halftime.
