NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- The SUNY New Paltz women’s soccer to fell to the visiting Blue Devils from Fredonia Saturday afternoon 3-0 on Alumni Field.
In the 12th minute, the Blue Devils (5-3-1, 2-1-0 SUNYAC) nearly took an early 1-0 advantage when Reilly Condidorio (LeRoy) shot hit the post off a cross from Melissa Cummiskey (Clarence).
The Hawks (3-3-3, 0-2-1 SUNYAC) first chance came in the 28th minute when Sherri Lajoie gathered a failed clear by the Blue Devils and hit the inside left post and rolled across the end-line and was cleared away by the Blue Devil defender. The Hawks would hold a slight advantage 7-4 in shots in the first half.
Fredonia State put an early second half goal on the board in the 49th minute when Lauren Heilweil (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) shot hit the post and was gathered by Christa Morgante (East Amherst/Williamsville East) for the goal.
The Blue Devils would take a 2-0 advantage in the 73rd minute when Heilweil earned her second assist of the game when her cross found Emily Beh (Penfield) for her second goal of the season. Heilweil also moved into second place on Fredonia State's all-time scoring list with 73 career points, one short of Jessica Weiser.
Fredonia State added a late goal in the 88th minute when Julia LaPolla (Penfield) sent a through ball down the middle of the field and found Cummiskey for the goal.
Meaghan Meszaros (Selden/Newfield) recorded the win in net, saving six shots for the Blue Devils. Danielle Gura recorded the loss in net, saving one shot for the Hawks.
The Blue Devils return to University Stadium next Wednesday to face Westminster in the first game of a doubleheader at 5 p.m. The Fredonia State and Westminster men meet in the nightcap.
