SALISBURY, Md. -- Freshman forward Katie Kleine (Cazenovia) scored at 66:01 and freshman goalkeeper Kayleigh Forger (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) made four saves as Fredonia State downed host Salisbury, 1-0, in the first round of the Salisbuiry Tournament.
Kleine took possession of the ball in the midfield and dribbled into the Salisbury zone with a defender alongside. As a second defender approached, Kleine struck a shot from the middle of the field outside the 18-yard line. The ball sailed over Salisbury goalkeeper Melissa Orgera, who had come out to contest the play, and into the net.
It was the first collegiate goal for Kleine, while Forger notched her first collegiate shutout. She made four saves, including a diving stop to preserve the shutout in the 76th minute. Salisbury's Shannon Donnelly received a crossing pass just inside the 6-yard box and fired a one-timer on net. Forger turned and dove to deny Donnelly.
Salisbury held the early advantage -- they had a 10-2 advantage in shots in the first half -- but were unable to put a shot behind Forger. The closest the Sea Gulls came was a shot off the crossbar by Casey Hafford. It was a switch in Salisbury's defensive system in the second half that gave the Blue Devils a boost. "What they were playing," head coach Chris Case said, "was causing us some problems but when they switched we were able to comprehend what we wanted to do."
Case credited freshman Taylor Wingerden (Macedon/Palmyra-Macedon) with helping settle the Blue Devils in the second half. Playing in the midfield, Wingerden -- normally a forward who had two goals Wednesday in a 4-1 home win over Medaille -- was able to control the ball long enough to slow the Salisbury attack. The Blut Devils outshot the Sea Gulls 6-5 in the second half.
The Blue Devils improved to 2-0 with the victory. They will meet Johns Hopkins at 2 p.m. Saturday in Salisbury. Johns Hopkins is No. 6 in the preseason NCAA Division III rankings.
