ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The University of Rochester scored twice during a seven-minute span in the second half en route to a 4-1 victory over Fredonia State in the Flower City Tournament.

Erin Carballo and Lindsay Rood scored for the Yellowjackets to erase a 1-0 lead by the Blue Devils (1-1) at Edwin Fauver Stadium. Christine Keck and Bridgette Varin scored in the final seven minutes to complete the scoring.

Rochester is 2-0.

Lauren Heilweil (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) gave the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute, assisted by Melissa Cummisky (Clarence/Clarence). Meaghan Meszaros (Selden/Newfield) made five saves for the Blue Devils and teammate Gwen Curtis (Rochester/Greece Arcadia) cleared a ball off the line. Celeste Hornback made three saves for Rochester.

The Yellowjackets outshot Fredonia, 18-7, and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

In a first half marked by plenty of attacking but very few strong chances, Fredonia struck for its goal. Cummisky raced down the left sideline and chipped a pass to the left post. Heilweil shook free of a defender and volleyed it into the top left hand corner of the goal at 30:28.

Ellen Coleman had two good chances early in the second half for Rochester. She hit the crossbar in the 48th minute, then saw Curtis clear her header off the line three minutes later.

Carballo equalized at 51:35, driving a shot to the low left corner. At 58:34, Varin dribbled through the defenders and passed to Rood at the top of the box for the go-ahead goal. Coleman set up Keck at 83:49 and Varin scored on a rebound of Coleman’s shot at 89:15 to complete the scoring.

The Classic continues on Saturday with SUNY New Paltz playing King’s (Pa.) College at 1 p.m. On Sunday, Fredonia will play King’s at 1 p.m. and Rochester will play New Paltz at 3:30 p.m.
