SALISBURY, Md. -- Nationally ranked Johns Hopkins broke open a scoreless tie with five second-half goals to defeat Fredonia State, 5-0, on the second day of the Salisbury University Tournament.
The Blue Devils dropped to 2-1 with the loss after flirting with an upset bid against the nation’s No. 6 team. It was the first game of the season for Johns Hopkins, while Fredonia State was playing for the second time in two days.
“For the middle part of the first half, we in their end,” Blue Devil head coach Chris Case said. “That’s when we had two of our corner kicks, and we had five shots. We kept the pressure on and were competitive for 45 minutes. In the second half, our legs wore out.”
The Blue Jays broke open the game with two goals second apart in the first five minutes of the second half. They added a third goal midway through the half, two toward the end, and outshot the Blue Devils 31-6. Two JH goalkeepers combined on the shutout.
Freshman forward Taylor Wingerden (Macedon/Palmyra-Macedon) was credited with two of the Blue Devils’ six shots. She and her teammates are back in action 5 p.m. next Friday against Baldwin-Wallace in the first round of the Clarion Hotel Soccer Classic at University Stadium.
