CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men pulled an upset of sorts Saturday with a team victory at the SUNY Cortland Jack Daniels Invitational, named after the famed Cortland coach.

The Blue Devils, ranked 10th in the Atlantic Regional, outperformed the host Red Dragons, the defending NCAA Division III champs currently ranked No. 3 in the country.

Several of the top Cortland runners were held out of the race, which also included Buffalo State and Oneonta.

Leading the Blue Devils was sophomore Eddie Novara (Angola/Lake Shore) with a 26:14 clocking for 8,000 meters -- third overall in the four-school race.

Junior Nick Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen) was fourth overall in 26:27, followed by junior David "Mac" McMahill (Hemlock/Livonia), 10th in 27:04; junior Matt Keppler (Valley Cottage/Nyack), 12th in 27:17; and freshman Brian Gallagher (Queensbury), 15th in 27:31.

The Blue Devil women tied for third in the four-team event. The top five Fredonia State finishers, in order, were freshman Nicole Bochman (Jamestown), sophomore Shannon Gowen (Clarence), sophomore Ashley Cocuzzi (Webster/Webster-Schroeder), junior Hailey Guard (Youngstown/Lewiston-Porter), and junior Kate Brett (Webster/Webster-Schroeder). Bochman was ninth overall in 24:41 for 6,000 meters.

The next meet for both Fredonia State teams is Oct. 17 at Oberlin College.
